Under the theme “Family Planning & Universal Health Coverage: Innovate. Collaborate. Accelerate.”, SEMA joined the diverse SRH community at the 2022 International Conference on Family Planning in Pattaya City, Thailand on 14 – 17 November. As a new partnership, SEMA Reproductive Health is working to promote greater collaboration between global and country actors to create healthy, equitable and resilient sexual and reproductive health markets. In this ICFP session, Hawa Talla from the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) presented early reflections from SEMA’s Health Markets Framework in Senegal, centering the event around the ‘SEMA Approach’ to collaboration and strengthening available data on global, national and product markets. This was followed by a panel to showcase other learnings from ministries of health, private sector, and NGOs partners across Africa, who identified both context-specific and cross-cutting market shortcomings and solutions.
This AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition (AVAC)-hosted session featured our Executive Director Blair Hanewall who presented an abstract, “From Pushing Products to Strengthening Markets: Redesigning SRH Market Shaping. Blair introduced the ‘SEMA Approach’ – how SEMA aims to meet consumer’s needs by promoting greater understanding and designing holistic market solutions through collaborative partnerships – in relation to HIV treatment and prevention.
During a mainstage panel co-hosted by SEMA and the Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition (RHSC), our Head of Markets James Droop presented the market challenges identified by SEMA’s global support market assessment. Martyn Smith, Director of RHSC, then facilitated an engaging panel where speakers discussed the role of country-led visions, cross-cutting collaboration, and innovating financing and procurement strategies to address these challenges.
Alexis Heaton, Head of Data & Analytics at SEMA, introduced the ICFP audience to our four-pronged approach to understanding, co-designing, financing, and implementing solutions for and tracking markets.
